Last weekend I went down to Salobreña, on the coast of Granada, to help look after El Casino gallery. This is one of the two locations in Granada where The Incredible Exploding Pomegranate Exhibition is being hosted, of which I am one of the participating artists. I was excited to spend some time at the seaside (yay, beach!) and also to see the other artists’ work up close and personal.
It turned out to be a really hot and humid few days but as the gallery only opens in the evenings (except by appointment) it wasn’t too bad. Thank the Lord for fans! It was interesting to see the other side of hosting an exhibition in a gallery, and I really enjoyed chatting to people who stopped by.
The best part was when a lady who was the daughter of one of the previous owners of the building called in. After having a look around, she told me the story of how the building had become abandoned and basically fallen into ruin, and she explained how happy she was to see it restored and looking beautiful again. It was all quite emotional and a few tears were shed!
Later on, as I was folding catalogue covers, she came back again, this time with her sweet little bird of a grandma who hung off my arm and told me her memories of the casino her grandfather had run there. She was especially touched to see that the owners had kept the name El Casino. It was so lovely to hear the history of the place, and see how happy they were that it had been brought back to life and was once again part of the local community.
